Vivek and Sabeena - Proposal Photography at Casa Loma, Toronto

Choosing a proposal location

When Vivek reached out to book a proposal session, he had a clear vision of how he would propose, but the “where” was still up in the air. Coming from outside of Toronto, he hadn’t been able to explore many ideal locations.

I ended up putting together a list of potential spots along with a pros and cons list, focusing on Vivek’s two main parameters – not too crowded, and a good view.

His choice? Casa Loma.

It ended up being a wonderful choice for him and Sabeena, his now fiancée (sorry, spoiler).

At the mercy of weather

Winter in Toronto can be quite grey at times. The week leading up to the proposal was no exception, and I was admittedly getting a little nervous about everything looking dull and muted on the day of the shoot.

It must have been fate or something because the night before the proposal, a massive blanket of snow quietly covered the city.

I’ve experienced a fair share of snowy winters in Toronto, but something about this snowfall felt special. On my way to Casa Loma, I had a feeling this would be a particularly beautiful scene to photograph.

My intuition was correct.

The castle grounds felt magical. It’s hard to accurately describe how I felt while wandering the area, but I was eager to start taking photos.

The proposal

Vivek and I kept tabs on each other’s locations using GPS until he and Sabeena arrived. Since Casa Loma is considered a landmark, Sabeena didn’t suspect a thing when she saw me with my camera.

Vivek and I acted like strangers as he asked me to take photos of them near one of the stone walls surrounding the castle. After taking a few standard portraits, Vivek got down on one knee, even though they were standing in a good amount of snow.

After snapping some reaction shots of Sabeena, I introduced myself and we let her in on the surprise.

Post-proposal portraits

Of course, we had to take advantage of the beautiful location. We spent some time taking portraits around the castle, spoiled by the number of wintery backgrounds.

Final thoughts and testimonial

This proposal ended up being such a highlight of my winter. Outdoor photoshoots can be a challenge for a variety of reasons, but the photography conditions for this session ended up exceeding my expectations.

Working with Vivek and Sabeena was such a pleasure, and they ended up leaving this five star review for me:

I reached out to Greg for proposal photography and it was a truly wonderful experience. Greg is fantastic to work with. His photography skills are exceptional, especially his ability to capture the genuine emotion of the moment. Beyond that, he was incredibly helpful in selecting beautiful, photogenic locations. Greg was also very communicative and made the entire process easy and stress-free. I will definitely be reaching out to him for future occasions!
